Bern Tourist Information.

Home

Bern is the capital of Switzerland. Bern is also a UNESCO Cultural World Heritage Site. The diversity and beauty of the city of Bern will impress even you. Much of central Bern is blocked off to road traffic. Bern truly is a pedestrian friendly city. If travelling by car, you are advised to use one of the parking garages or the 'blue zones' (but parking is limited to a maximum 1.5 hours with parking disc). Parking permits for 'these blue' zones are available at the railway station tourist centre, the city police or at ticket automats.

Practically all the hotels and sights are within a few minutes walk of the huge train station that is centrally situated at the western edge of the Old Town. The Old Town area of Bern is made of; Spitalgasse/Marktgasse/ Kramgasse/Gerechtigkeitsgasse is in the centre;
Aarbergergasse/ Zeughausgasse/Rathausgasse/Postgasse is the northernmost;
Schauplatzgasse/ Amthausgasse/Münstergasse/Junkerngasse is to the south. In the centre of the Old Town you will find the Zytglogge clocktower. The most popular museums are located around Helvetiaplatz to the south. If you get one of the few flights to operate into Bern’s tiny airport, trains leave for Bern every 30 minutes and they take 20 minutes. A taxi into Bern should cost no more than Fr.35. Germany is spoken, so brush up on your skills.
