The harbour village of Charlestown was packed with ships throughout the 19th century.
Other complementary dock businesses included; pilchard curing, boatbuilding, brickworks, lime burning, net houses,
bark houses and ropemaking . The Port was built between 1790 and 1810 for the export of china clay and copper.
Charlestown is against all odds, still operating as a working harbour and a small amounts of china clay are still exported.
Charlestown has largely escaped 'redevelopment' and remains one of the finest and most fascinating places on the Cornish coast.
The harbour is the home port for a famous collection of old ships which are used in film projects all over the world.
