Nicosia, the capital and largest city of Cyprus, has one unfortunate distinction. It is now Europe's only militarily divided city. Nicosia is located on the Pedieos river and situated roughly in the middle of the island. The 1974 Turkish invasion and occupation of 36% of the island's territory cut up the capital in half. Nicosia is a modern, dynamic capital with lots of restaurants, shops and entertainment.
